Welcome to Ashtanga Yoga Sitges!
Ashtanga physical practice is based on Vinyasa (breathing and movement system) which synchronizes rhythmic breathing with movement and takes us from one posture to another, creating a fluid and energetic sequence of postures (asanas). Along with breathing we use bandhas (energy locks) and drishtis (focused gaze), managing to control our senses, focusing on one thing.
The practice of Asana, together with vinyasa, produces internal heat that allows toxins (physical, mental and emotional) to be released through sweat, which makes us feel cleaner and lighter when finished. . This process helps us strengthen the body and the immune system, making it more flexible just like the mind.
Yoga is a philosophy of life that aims at the self-realization of the Being, through the healing of body and mind. The practice of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga is based on an ancient writing called the Yoga Sutra, by Patanjali. It was written approximately 2000 years ago and describes the 8 branches (ashtau - 8 anga-members) to reach self-knowledge, and thus achieve the union between mind - body and spirit.
There is no specific age or condition to start the practice. You can always adapt the postures and movements to the specific needs of the practitioner. You just need the will, the desire to learn and enjoy.
NAMASTE
At Ashtanga Yoga Sitges we practice and share with our student's community traditional Ashtanga Yoga according to the teachings of Sri K. Patthabi Jois.
Tammy Hervitz, founder and director of the Shala, has been an Ashtanga Yoga teacher since 2001 and has been practicing daily since 1999.
Together with her husband Marcelo they founded the first Ashtanga school in Sitges in 2003 and one of the first in Spain. Currently, her daughter Daniela teaches classes with her.
The Shala is a very familiar and personal place, full of light and love, where yoga practitioners come 6 weeks a week to join led classes and Mysore self-practice.

Ashtanga Sitges
The practice of Yoga is designed to helpus, practitioners to come back home, inside, “back to the centre”, to the source.
It makes us stronger and more flexible; bodymind speaking.
If you ever took a yoga class then you know this feeling of harmony and peace you feel after you finish your practice, even if it lasts just for a few minutes. This is how the practice makes us tune in, restart, recycle, cleanse and flow. It is like cleaning the crystals of your glasses in order to see well.
Patience is a wonderful gift. A tool of many uses. For various body-mind needs. We are all running around in circles not finding a moment rest. Practice teaches how to use your energy correctly. How to relax into ourselves, how to be present in that moment; any moment.
Right now observe. No past, no future, no stories, no identity, no bullshit, no gossip. Just ourselves. Relaxing on the mat. Steady and comfortably.
This can teach us how to find peace in the middle of a storm. How many storms did we live during our life? Some lived, some seen from aside, some heard of, some nonexistent even.
And so are we.

"Yoga, as a way of life and a philosophy, can be practiced by anyone with inclination to undertake it, for yoga belongs to humanity as a whole. It is not the property of any one group or any one individual, but can be followed by any and all, in any corner of the globe, regardless of class, creed or religion.”
